Since the reform and opening up in 1978,especially in the 1980 s,Chinese contemporary art has developed rapidly. The artists actively participated in this wave of arts and culture, learning from Western art concepts and formal languages, and combining them with their own cultural traditions to carry out artistic experimental exploration. Many of these artists have fixed their eyes on Chinese characters. This article will use the contemporary art works created by these artists as their elements as an example to deeply explore the specific formal languages of Chinese characters used in contemporary Chinese art. This article mainly includes four parts. The first part of the combination of Chinese characters and Chinese contemporary art was elaborated from the cultural origins of Chinese characters and Chinese traditional art,the historical background of the special period of the 1980 s,and the specific art form of the combination of Chinese characters and Chinese contemporary art.The second part of this paper focuses on the interpretation of the formal language of Chinese characters in Chinese contemporary art.It mainly discusses related works from the four aspects of the unique Chinese character language, the formal characteristics of Chinese contemporary art,the use of Chinese characters in Chinese contemporary art,and the reform of formal languages, and puts forward their own opinions. The third part talks about the use of Chinese characters in my creation, combines the study of this article with personal creation, and discusses them from the establishment of creative direction, the recording of specific creative practices, and the practical experience of creation. The fourth part of the conclusion discusses the innovative nature of Chinese contemporary art in terms of formal language. It also reveals the dependence of Chinese contemporary art on western formal concepts and calls for the originality of art.
