Under the guidance of “thick translation” theory, researchers at home and abroad have proved the applicability and scientificity of the theory from different perspectives. The theory of “thick translation” uses interpretive texts such as footnotes, end notes, textual explanations to provide readers with abundant background information, help readers to better understand source texts, appreciate and respect the source language culture as well as promote cultural exchanges.Based on the translation practice of The Sunna and Shi'a in History, the translation report explores classification, methods and suggestions of annotations in academic translation with the application of “thick translation”.The main research methods used in this report are summarization and case analysis.Through the specific application of the theory and case analysis, the report draws the following conclusions:(1)annotations within text are used as brief information supplements and can be directly added into target texts or by using brackets;(2)annotations outside text are generally used by explaining important information throughout translation;(3)the added notes should be clear and simple,as well as content-based and reader-needed,and they should be added in certain logical order;(4)for notes of similar nouns, the style should be unified in order to achieve scientific and rigorous results;meanwhile, attention should be paid to clarity and objectivity.By applying the theory of “thick translation”,the author analyzes the features of annotations in the academic translation, and summarizes appropriate annotation approaches and cautions of various kinds. It is hoped that this report can provide useful implications for future translation on similar works.
