As an indispensable part of Chinese culture, traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)has been regarded as the treasure of the Chinese nation.Under the Belt and Road Initiative,an increasing number of TCM products are exported to the international market. As a vital guide of TCM,the translation quality of traditional Chinese medicine Inserts(TCM inserts)is crucial to the internationalization of TCM.There are many existing problems in the English translation of TCM inserts currently, such as no uniformed translation standards, poor readability, mechanical translation, etc. In order to understand the status quo of TCM inserts translation as well as find out problems in terms of content and format,258 English versions of TCM Inserts were collected as research corpus in this paper from pharmacies, hospitals, and the Internet.Text analysis and questionnaires were used to analyze and explore the existing problems in the English translation of the inserts.By introducing Skopos theory as the theoretical framework,a study was conducted on the translation of names, indications, and sub-headings of collected inserts. In order to produce translations with good readability and high acceptability, the following conclusions under the guidance of Skopos theory are drawn: the translation of names should adopt translation methods such as free translation, recreation, etc.,the translation of indications should use translation techniques such as addition and omission, the translation of sub-headings should use the standardized term, supplement missing subheadings, and provide detailed description.
