Chinese society is featured in its rural characteristics.The development of Chinese rural novels has been closely linked with the changes of Chinese rural areas since the May 4th Movement.As a novelist who arose in the late 1970 s,Jia Pingwa has created a large number of literary works with the spirit of times and profound significance for the past four decades.And each of his works is imbedded with unforgettable historical traces due to its unique historical events.For his novels and narrative features,they are closely linked with the development of Chinese rural areas.These works are also taking an active role as the witness for the great changes of opening-up and reform,development of modern society and ups and downs of the national spirit.From Shangzhou 1984 to Jihua 2016,he has made a thorough record of the modernization process of Chinese rural area and its struggles.This thesis begins with an overview of the intertextuality between Chinese rural area and rural novel,and proposes the idea of the rural characteristics of Chinese society.It also analyses the relavance between rural novels and changes of Chinese rural area.The research focus is on Jia's novels including Shangzhou,Turbulence,Gravidity,Gaolaozhuang,the Memory of the Wolf,Qinq Opera,Old Furuance,Daideng,Laosheng,and Jihua.In this thesis,the authenticity of Jia's novel for the changes and reforms of Chinese rural area will be analyzed,the synchronic picture as well as the diachronic changes of the rural area will be discussed,and the intertextuality between the transformation ofcontemporary Chinese rural area and his works will be examined.Moreover,it explores and summarizes the characteristics of rural narrative feature and the inheritance of traditional aesthetics spirit in his novels.From early 1980 s to today,great changes have taken place in Chinese social structure.And an enormous number of contradictions and conflicts appeared as a result.Jia Pingwa is recording these changes with his words and works.His ten novels therefore are serving as an epic for the changes in Chinese rural areas for the past four decades and a witness for the Reform and Opening up Policy.These novels also reveal the influence of modernization on the changes and development in economy,politics and culture in Chinese rural areas.Meanwhile,Jia Pingwa's novel with rural narration demonstrate itself with its aesthetic features in intertextuality,tradition,and mystery.
