Nanning,capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region,blooms with charm and beauty.2003,a big year witnessed Nanning's ascending to “the permanent venue for China-ASEAN Expo”,and from this year onwards,the city has become a new hot land for investment,resulting a blowout growth;thanks to the unique advantage as a neighbor of ASEAN countries,as well as an easy and close access to Guangdong,Hongkong and Macao,it won himself “ the Hub of Beibu Gulf Economic Zone” & “An Important Gateway Connecting the Belt and Road”.The Evolution of Nanning Culture: Mystery Power,from the perspective of local history,with an easy and graceful tone,tells Nanning's stories well;it mainly reveals Nanning's course of development as well as its unique and appealing culture,the folk custom of Nanning people and description of the cityscapes' romantic charm.This book is a superior representative among city publicity materials at home.For that matter,the translator gained passion for rendering Nanning's publicity-oriented materials into English,and finished this report to make these materials more accessible.Hope through translation,more westerners can learn about Nanning and China,and in turn promote the “going out” of Chinese culture.One of the far-reaching concepts in western rhetoric,identification theory was put forward by the American rhetorician Kenneth Burke,who stressed that a successful persuasion depends upon the “common substance” to establish identification between audiences and persuader.As a cross-linguistic and cross-cultural communication activity,a successful translation for city's international communication is the employment of symbols in a way which functions in the target text reader bear a striking resemblance to those represented by them in the source text reader.This report introduced identification theory into C/E translation of city publicity materials,and believed that the principle of publicity-oriented C/E translation is to follow western audiences' mode of discourse so as to realize China's international communication.To meet this goal,the author adopted two target language-centered strategies: guarantee of the information credibility and adherence to the target audience's expression habits.Drawing from a large corpus of case studies,this article identified what the author believed to be the most promising skills for C/E translation of city publicity materials: interpretive translation,adaptation,application of “China English” in introducing Chinese culture,translator's interference and so on.The translation of Nanning's publicity materials from “identification” perspective is an academic branch that is just finding its feet in China.For now,extremely few translators are engaged in such work.
