A Comparative Study On The Two English Versions Of Chen Zhong De Chi Bang From The Perspective Of Feminist Translation Theory

Chen Zhong De Chi Bang,which won the second Mao Dun Literary Prize,is a contemporary Chinese novel written by Zhang Jie.It sketches a battle about reform of economic management system in national industry department from 1970 s to 1980 s.Full of Chinese historical and cultural characteristics,the novel has its unique language features.Its English version Leaden Wings,published in 1987,was translated by British translator Gladys Yang,and Heavy Wings,and another version published in 1989,was translated by the famous sinologist Howard Goldblatt.With the vigorous development of the feminist movement in the West as well as the “cultural turn” in translation studies,the “gender” issue was brought into translation studies for the first time.By bringing “gender” into translation studies,feminist translation not only broadens the translation studies by offering a new perspective,but also gives fresh impetus to the “cultural turn” of translation studies.Based on the feminist translation theory,this thesis seeks to analyze the differences between these two English versions of Chen Zhong De Chi Bang.The comprehensive analysis is conducted from the translators’ subjectivities,specific translation strategies adopted and gender awareness.Comparison of these two versions of Chen Zhong De Chi Bang leads to the conclusion that in terms of translated works,female translator tends to manipulate the translation in order to achieve her goals,while the male translator adopts a more gentle way to express the original text.It is hoped that readers will have a deeper understanding of feminist translation theory,and will pay more attention to the translators’ gender consciousness and the translating process.Thereby,this thesis will be considered as having contributed to the studies of feminist translation and Chen Zhong De Chi Bang...
