| Han Shan's poems have long been in the marginal zone of traditional Chinese poetry.This situation didn't change for more than one thousand year until the year of 1958 when famous American poet Gary Snyder translated Han Shan's poems.The English version was widely disseminated once published,which drew great attention in the West,especially in America.Although there exist many researches on Han Shan's poems,they are seldom touched upon from sociological perspective.Among all the sociological theories,the theory put forward by famous French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu is the most frequently used in translation studies for associating subjectivism(individual)with objectivism(society).Based on Bourdieu's sociological theory in light of field,habitus and capital respectively,this thesis adopts qualitative analysis and case analysis to explore the choice of original texts,the translation process and their reception in America.Contributions and significance of this thesis can be summed up as follows:Firstly,the author hopes to provide a new perspective for the research on translation of Han Shan's poems and a useful reference for Chinese literature going out.Secondly,according to the investigation and analysis on the dissemination and popularity of Han Shan's poems,it can be found that the theme and style of Han Shan's poems in accordance with American literary field and social background around the 1950 s and 1960s;the translator's habitus contributes to his choice of original texts for translation and translation methods;the translator Snyder has enough capitals to translate.In order to make Chinese literature go out through translation,the author argues that the theme and style of the original works should meet the requirements of the target literary field and social background;the translator's habitus plays an important role in the choice of original texts and translation methods;Capital matters a lot to the reception of translated works. |
