Report On The Translation Of Singapore And The Silk Road Of The Sea,1300--1800

The Silk Road of the Sea,the maritime passage connecting ancient Chinese with other countries in transportation,trade and cultural exchanges was first mentioned by the French Orientalist,Chavannes in 1913.The translation of historical books is not only simple translation of texts but also the history and culture behind the texts.In order to make the translation of historical text adapt to the language,context and culture of target language,translators should not only retain the source language's rhetoric,image and connotation but also preserve the related historical allusions,scenic and geographical characteristics while translating such texts.According to the features of the source text,a new theoretical basis is provided by the adaptation theory for its translation.It interprets the use of language in four aspects: contextual correlates of adaptability,structural objects of adaptability,dynamics of adaptability and salience of the adaptation process.Since all language activities can be considered as communication processes,and pragmatics focuses on the realization of communicative intention,so the adaptation of communicative intention is selected as the translation strategy,which is mainly reflected on four parts of adaptation: names,structure,history and culture.The particularity and complexity of cultural and historical background determine the versatile and flexible selection of translation methods for historical texts.The methods selected include transliteration,literal translation,borrowing,transliteration and interpretation,additions,annotations,combination,splitting,active passive voice,adding pictures and adding forms.The report is made in order to provide reference for the translation of historical texts.
