Nowadays,the main goal of English teaching in countryside middle schools is to improve the grade of students for senior high school entrance examination,which only focuses on the students' written test and listening ability,so teachers also pay attention to vocabulary teaching and grammar teaching,while ignoring how to cultivate students' English communication skills.With the development and progress of the times,talents need English communication skills,so English teaching in countryside areas has not been adapted to the needs of modern talents training.This paper conducts a case study of two countryside middle school students for a year-long follow-up survey and investigates the development and changes in grammar competence,communicative competence,social linguistic competence and strategic competence of two students,based on the analysis of collected classroom observations,interview questionnaires and so on.In terms of communicative competence,the two students' English integration ability has been enhanced and they can express coherent and complete meanings in English.The results of the present study show that,in terms of grammar competence,two subjects have reduced grammatical errors as their learning time increases,but the rate of error reduction differs,A is faster than B.But A expresses more clearly in communication activities;In terms of social linguistic competence.These two students mainly start conversations by means of replacing words of text book and now they can expand content of conversations by a fixed topic.In terms of strategic competence,it can be seen that students' strategic competence is not sufficient from their communicative activities.When difficulties are encountered in the process of communication,it can be seen that both of them have insufficient strategic skills,they can only repeat the content or even interrupt the dialogue.By means of the interview survey and classroom tracking,it can be found that the influencing factors of communicative competence are multiple.Firstly,the family environment and the low level of education of parents make it possible for students to merely improve their grammar competence by themselves after class.Secondly,the influence of students' own factors including the mastery of students' learning strategies,their own personalities and psychological factors,etc,which affect the improvement of their communicative competence,and also lead to the unbalanced development of their communicative competence.Thirdly,the design of classroom activities and the teaching methods are more focused on grammar teaching,which has a positive effect on the improvement of students' grammar competence,but it does not help objects to improve their strategic and social linguistic competence.
