Niebla is the most well-known of Unamuno's work.It was written after the war between America and Spain: Spain suffered a crisis in 1898 and was undergoing a loss of its colonies, while its people were subjected to the death and suffering caused by a series of anarchic movements and civil wars. The novel examines the problems as the tragic sense of life and explores the way that led to the renaissance of Spain. As one of the greatest masterpieces in Spanish literature,Niebla is an experimental novel which connects classics of Spanish golden age and Spanish modern works.By inheriting and developing the Cervantes' s narrative form,it created a new genre called Nivola. With a unique literary form and profound symbolism,it gave expressions to the essential problems of western culture such as life, tragic sense, death, rationalism, belief and soul, etc.Unamuno placed a great importance on the flesh and blood human beings in his philosophy. It conveys a tragic sense of life by showing the limitation to human's immortal desire and an inevitable death. His praise and emphasis on the belief actually reconsidered the merely rational problem in a totally different way in contrast to Descartes. The novel offers a new perspective on the philosophical dilemma caused by rational way of thinking.Furthermore,it enlightens Spanish spirit to find a way to be immortal. This thesis is to investigate the novel from perspective of Unamuno's philosophical term “the flesh and blood human being” and interpret its specific definition in Unamuno's philosophy. And it reveals the real significance of an undercurrent filled with tragic sense of life beneath the superficial suffering and death in Niebla.First,it analyses the source and meaning of flesh and blood human beings and its relation with Unamuno's tragic sense.Second,by analyzing the emergence of flesh and blood human beings' characteristics,it shows that flesh and blood human beings is the starting point of every tragic sense. Then it indicates that the flesh and blood human beings live with tragic sense because of the limitation. And it points out that death means the living will is limited, which shows a tragic sense “from shallow level to deep level”.Finally,it deepens the understanding of death, which faith affirms the immortality of the soul while the reason denies the immortality. These two sides are irreconcilable, which means the immortality cannot be confirmed. Therefore, the conflict between reason and belief becomes the core of tragic sense. This conflict is both a rejection of rationalism and a guidance to prosper the Spanish nation.
