Abstract/Summary:
The Ambassadors,a representative work in late Henry James, intensively embodies his mature artistic techniques and master-level language art.As a representative writer of psychological realism,Henry James portraited the mentality of the main character in different scenes, recording what main character saw and thought about in Paris to show readers the change and development of the character’s psychological consciousness. As a master of fiction art,James frequently used the long sentences with complex syntactic structure to depict the flow and change of mental consciousness, and formed his unique "James style".After reading The Ambassadors,we can find that the syntax of the intricate and overlapping bed architecture is used to depict the mentality, construct important scenes and promote the development of the plot. However, its elaborate and complex syntax also poses great challenges to the reader’s reading and the translator’s translation, which makes his works difficult to understand and translate. This paper is mainly divided into four parts. The first part is the introduction. It briefly introduces the life and works of Henry James, analyzes the overseas and domestic research status and elaborates the research significance, methods and innovations. The second part to the fourth part are the main contents of the thesis.Based on a detailed analysis of the syntactic structure of different long sentence types in the The ambassadors, this paper compares and analyzes the processing of the long sentence structure of the two translations, and points out the misinterpretation phenomena. In the second part, first of all, from the perspective of the semantic delay of the periodic sentence, this paper analyzes the role of the delay structure of the periodic sentence in illustrating the subject and setting the suspense.By comparison,it is found that the mistranslations in the periodic sentence are mostly caused by the arbitrarily changing the word order of the inserted components and grammatical components in the end.In the third part, from the point of view of James’ s time grammar, this paper takes the long sentences with no segmentation and multi-segmentation as the object of study, and analyses the relationship between grammar of time and the multiple time lines of the main character.By analyzing comparative translations, this paper points out that some of the translations fail to sort out the logical relationships between different mental timelines, which resulted in mistranslations and missing translations. The fourth part analyzes the parallelism sentence in The ambassadors from two perspectives: the perspective of the novel’s character consciousness and the semantic blurring produced by the superposition of abstract nouns. The parallelism sentence plays an important role in expressing the continuity of the perspective of the characters and enhancing the vagueness of the semantics.Parallelism sentences in the ambassadors are mostly used in the depiction of scenes and the consciousness of character. The change of scenes and character consciousness in the perspective of character consciousness centers complements the continuity of parallelism sentence, and the ambiguity of abstract nouns is also superimposed on the quantity. The mistranslations and missing translations are mostly due to the failure to notice James’ s unique creative perspective and the fuzzification of character awareness.
