A Survey About The Views Of The Interpretation Circle On Artificial Intelligence Interpreting

This thesis is a survey study.In September 2016,Google Translate switched from Phrase-Based Machine Translation(PBMT)to Google Neural Machine Translation(GNMT),a new AI technology that saves information about the meaning of phrases,rather than just direct phrase translations.Compared to Google's phrase-based production system,Facebook's Artificial Intelligence Research team published research results using a new approach for neural machine translation(NMT).(2017)Their algorithm scores higher than any other system on three established machine translation tasks,and runs nine times faster than Google's NMT system.Domestic companies like Baidu,Tencent,Sougou,and Kedaxunfei also invested heavily in this technology and got good results.The breakthroughs mentioned above,which are of revolutionary significance in interpretation industry,prompted this thesis.This thesis reports upon a survey carried out among 35 trainee interpreters,5 teachers of interpretation major from universities and 27 professional interpreters.The survey was conducted by asking the samples to fill out a questionnaire.The questions aimed at assessing the attitudes of the respondents towards the latest breakthrough in Artificial Intelligence Interpreting and what responsive strategies they would take to grapple with this challenge.The results of the questionnaire were elaborated so as to demonstrate how they view the relation between the future of interpretation industry and the technology.The thesis suggests that most of the respondents pay some attention,thus know some of the development of Artificial Intelligence Interpreting,but few expects this technology to evolve into their future job stealer.In conclusion,the majority of them are optimistic about the development of technology because in their view,instead of replacing them,MI at best could only facilitate their work.
