| This is a Chinese to English translation report on Chinese Characters and Personal Names(I).Chapter One and Section One of Chapter Two from the book were chosen as the translation material.The book written by Sun Xuwu is designed to reveal Chinese name culture by analyzing the relationship between ancient people’s names and Chinese characters.It investigates such topics as the origin and development of surnames and first names.The source text aims at spreading Chinese name culture and making foreign readers have a broader view of Chinese culture.Therefore,the Skopos Theory can be chosen to guide the translation.Mainly based on Skopos Theory,this report analyzes some typical translation problems,such as translation of book titles,official titles,culturally-loaded words and loose sentences.Meanwhile,main findings from the translation and limitations are included in this report.This report covers five chapters.Chapter One is task description,which introduces the source text and the task requirement.Chapter Two is process description,which consists of pre-preparation and translation procedure.Chapter Three is theoretical framework,including translation theory – Skopos Theory and translation strategies.Chapter Four is the case study,which will be developed into five aspects,literal translation,free translation,amplification,deletion and division.Chapter Five is the report summary,including main findings and limitations drawn from the translation task. |
