As the main base for discussing the theories of the Xueheng School,the ideological connotation of The Critical Review without doubt has close relationship with the Xueheng School.As an organic part of the magazine,the article of the miscellaneous column has an internal spiritual connection with the academic stands and thoughts of The Critical Review and the Xueheng School,and among them,the travel notes,poetics and translation works are the important data supplement for the current study of The Critical Review and the Xueheng School besides the academic papers and literary works and other historical materials of the scholars whose papers had been printed on The Critical Review because they have the outstanding characteristics of essays and scholars prose.Although the miscellaneous column has attracted a small number of scholars' attention,there is a lack of systematic analysis and research,therefore the miscellaneous column has the value of further research.Balance and moderation constitute the most important aesthetic tendency and cultural temperament of the Miscellaneous Columns of The Critical Review.Based on the relevant results of the study of The Critical Review and the detailed reading of the travel notes,poetics and translated works in miscellaneous columns,this paper gives a deeper insights of the Xueheng School and The Critical Review,from the macroscopic view of world culture by horizontal comparing with the new culture movement,summing up their conciliatory opinions and neutral positions on the construction of national culture,talent cultivation,poetics criticism and novel criticism.Because both the influence of the Chinese traditional Confucianism culture on their growth and elementary education and the profound effects of the new humanism during they studied abroad,the Xueheng School tries a lot to reconcile the contradictions between science and humanity,China and the west,tradition and modernity,rationality and sensibility.In general,it embodies a beauty of steadiness and balance.Meanwhile,we also noticed the individual difference.Starting from the romantic tendency of Wu Mi in literary criticism,the article concluded that his sensitive character made him unable to reconcile the conflicts between morality and personal,academic position and emotional life,which leads to his tragedy.There are six main parts of this paper.The introduction is mainly about the current research status of The Critical Review and the Xueheng School,the research significance and methods of the study,and the general situation of miscellaneous programs.The first chapter analyzes travel notes and explores the cultural ideas contained in the miscellaneous column.The second chapter analyzes poetics and examines their duality of classical tradition and modernity.The third chapter studies the classical novel criticism tendency via reading translation works,and further explores that Wu Mi showed a departure from new humanism late in the school magazine showed a departure from classical tendency in the later period of The Critical Review.Finally,this paper summarizes the position of cultural conservatism of this column and its debate strategy,and reveals its tragic implication.The attempt to bridge the cultural rupture by recalling the past and the genius awareness by staying away from the worldly interest consciously make the Miscellaneous Columns unified in the basic position of the cultural conservatism of the Xueheng school and The Critical Review.
