The thesis uses Aldo Leopold’s ecological holism to explore the holistic views in Charles Dickens’ novel Hard Times.Through the character Sissy Jupe,the thesis reveals the pursuit of holistic harmony with nature conveyed in Hard Times.Aldo Leopold’s ecological holism is against man’s conquering of nature,advocates the intrinsic value and continued existence of the ecosystem and of its members,focuses on using the principle of integrity,stability and beauty to guide man’s relationships with the ecosystem,and achieves the state of holistic harmony with others members of the ecosystem.His ecological holism is significant for guiding man’s relations with nature and is consistent with Dickens’ holistic harmony with nature.In Hard Times,Dickens reveals his thinking and exploration of man’s relations with nature.Hard Times is one of Dickens’ representatives.In the novel,Dickens portrays various characters,and among them Sissy is vital for the development of the plot.In Hard Times,by analyzing the thoughts and behaviors of Sissy,the thesis reveals Sissy’s objection of destructing the natural environment,studies her respect of the intrinsic value and the continued existence of the members of the ecosystem,and explores her pursuit of the holistic harmony with nature.Firstly,the thesis analyzes the deteriorating natural environment in Hard Times,explores the culture root behind it and studies Sissy’s objection of its culture root.Secondly,the thesis explores Sissy’s affirmation and respect of the intrinsic value and continued existence of the ecosystem and its members.Thirdly,the thesis probes into Sissy’s harmonious relations with members of the ecosystem.Lastly,the thesis draws the conclusion of the study.Through the exploration,the thesis finds that in Hard Times,those characters such as Sissy are against anthropocentrism.They respects the intrinsic value of the ecosystem and its members,and coexists with them in order to stay in harmony with nature.Through the portraying of the character Sissy,Dickens expresses his pursuit of holistic harmony with nature and shows his consideration of the relation between man and nature.Dickens seeks after a holistic harmony with nature and conveys his pursuit through the character Sissy.Dickens lives in Victorian ages,in which the industry develops rapidly.He gets insight into the crises behind the economic bloom,and puts the ecological and holistic views into his novel Hard Times.Sissy shows her objection of the deteriorating natural environment,affirms of the intrinsic value of members of the ecosystem and respects their continued existence,and expresses her pursuit of the holistic harmony with nature.In Hard Times,through the portraying of the character Sissy,Dickens reveals his pursuit of holistic harmony with nature.
