Most of extant images of infants were carved during Tang to Song dynasty in Grottoes of Bashu district,particularly the infants in Song dynasty were maximum,the most abundant and exquisite.This was in accord with the historical background which traditional infants shaping art was prosperous in Song dynasty.According to existing survey and statistics,there exsit over 300 images of infants in Bashu Grottoes at present,and they distribute scatteredly relatively.The amount and themes of them are the largest and the most extensive respectively in Bazhong of the North Sichuan and Dazu of the East Sichuan.Otherwise,the infants are also carved sporadically in the grottoes of Guangyuan and Mianyang of the North Sichuan,Luzhou of the South Sichuan,Anyue of the Central Sichuan,Qionglai,Pujiang and Danling of the West Sichuan,Hechuan and Jiangjing of the East Sichuan.Because Bashu Grottoes have distinct religious properties,a part of infants in them have strong Buddhist or Taoist meanings,are carved according to essential Buddhist or Taoist demands.However,some infants also show individual characters which dissociate religious demands under the background of special eras and societies inevitably.Although more infants have specific religious meanings,they show keen worldly interest.The infants in the family environment usually show ignorant,naughty,naive temperament in appearances,expressions and motions,they play important roles in conveying cozy,nice life interests.The infants in the field environment seem active,leisure,relaxed,they match all environment and bring fresh,wild natural fun.Besides,there are some infants in other environment,most of them are carved according to civil infants directly and reproduce a set of life scenes of vivid ancient civil infants on the premise of high secularization.The infants in Bashu Grottoes show their own vivid art features and reveal unique charm of artistic creation.In sculpting,lots of infants are shaped original and enjoyably through logical transformation and exaggeration in specific shaping on the premise of meeting basic realistic requirement generally,the expressiveness and appeal of them are reinforced further.Meanwhile,the infants in Bashu Grottoes reach organic combination of expression manifestations and motion depictions in holistic shaping,so abundant psychological states of the infants are reflected more exact and vivid and match their specific identities and surrounding environments.In usage of colors,the infants inBashu Grottoes are coloured with gold,white,blue,green,and so on principally.The craftsmen give consideration to religious demands and physical truths of shaping objects adequately at the same time,so that selection and collocation of colors fit appearances,textures,identities,ages,psychological states and so on and conform to specific demands of visual aesthetic feelings.In the comparison of the infants at the same period in the grottoes of other areas,taking Dunhuang Grottoes as a representation,the infants in Bashu Grottoes are weak in the amount of kinds and the richness,but show deeper secularization and the way that humanities surpass divinities.In the overall background of the development of the infants in ancient plastic art,the infants in Bashu Grottoes embody more distinct civilian tendency and secularization,deliver more rich and strong secular interests in the comparison of the infants at the same period in the other forms of plastic arts.
