Cinema, like all art,is representation, however, cinema has its own characteristic, its approximation with reality. It is in this pretended approach that it becomes a useful tool for a social analysis, since it points out a talk of itself,of society. In this talk of itself, especially in American and Brazilian industrial cinema,it intensifies stereotypes, creating representations that are taken as examples of behaviors, and orchestrates collective ideological and imaginary discourses.Since its establishment,Western films have been developed more and more, specially after the 1990's.Film works have received more and more attention and recognition from the audience. The purpose propose of this dissertation is to open a discussion on family conflicts caused, initially, because the woman(and also mother)is the provider of the family. The Feminist movement emerged in the late 1960 s amidst the fervor of anti-war demonstrations and civil and queer rights movements.Hearkening back ideals of early twentieth-century modernist movements,Feminist artists sought to rewrite a falsely male-dominated art history as well as change the contemporary world around them through their art, focusing on intervening in the established art world and the art canon's legacy,as well as in everyday social interactions.Feminist artists also began to look for alternative ways to represent women. Here, too, the female body served as a central element.Viewing their use of it as a direct reflection of the eminist perception, these artists attempted to create a counterresponse to the traditional representation of the female body in Western art—a negative stereotypical gender bias which had tendentiously and voyeuristically exploited the female body under the male gaze.In the United States of America, the 1990 s,the film industry was particularly strong in terms of substantive dramatic films of many genres. It becomes apparent that the 1990 s offers a much more compelling American cinematic decade to consider than perhaps previously assumed. The first film to be analyzed is the Brazilian film The Second Mother and the second film analyzed is the Hollywood movie Erin Brockovich. Both films have important features for discussing family conflicts in women-led families. In order to better understand this issue,we use feminism and as one of the reasons for explainingfamily conflict. This dissertation issues are related to the discussion of feminism in Western cinema, especially in Brazil and the United States. These movies clearly and concisely reflect how Western women's role in Western movies has grown up.In what ways,Western gender discrimination is seen as an objectification of women in movies, especially after the 1990 s.Although we can not compare the amount of films produced in the United States with the quantity of films produced in Brazil, both countries have their own language regarding feminism in the contemporary world.Obviously, the production of films made in Hollywood,as in the case of the film Erin Brockovich, have much larger financial allocations than a production of a Brazilian film. However, despite this, the content of this Brazilian film in particular, translates the wealth of knowledge and strength that Brazil has.Nevertheless, both films approach the same theme from different histories, situations and dialogues.Another motivating factor for the creation of the theme of this dissertation is that there is not much research in Brazil related to the topic addressed in this dissertation, which makes research even more valid and productive. The Brazilian cinema has been gradually growing its films since the 1990 s has had even more relevance in the film field in the western world.
