A Survey Of College English Teachers' Intercultural Communicative Competence In Guangxi

It is speculated in English Curriculum Requirements of various levels by the State Ministry of Education that the ultimate goal of English language teaching is to cultivate the leaners' intercultural communicative competence.However,English teachers' intercultural communicative competence is rarely described in relevant Requirements,and related research is seldom found in China.With 116 College English teachers as the research subjects and by means of questionnaire,this research probes into College English teachers' intercultural communicative competence in Guangxi,aiming to answer the following questions:(1)What is the general picture of the subjects' intercultural communicative competence?(2)Does there exist any significant difference in terms of gender in intercultural communicative competence?(3)Does there exist any significant difference in terms of teaching time in intercultural communicative competence?(4)Does there exist any significant difference in terms of academic qualification in intercultural communicative competence?(5)Does there exist any significant difference in terms of professional title in intercultural communicative competence?(6)Does there exist any significant in terms of overseas experience in intercultural communicative competence?Results indicate that College English teachers' intercultural communicative competence falls in the medium level,suggesting that there is still much space for improvement;There does not exist any significant difference in College English teachers' intercultural communicative competence in terms of gender and teaching time;There does not exist any significant difference in College English teachers' intercultural communicative competence in terms of academic qualification,but there does exist significant difference in dimensions of Skills of Discovery and Interaction and Critical Cultural Awareness;There exist significant difference in terms of professional title in intercultural communicative competence,and they are positively related;There does exist significant difference in terms of overseas experience in intercultural communicative competence,but they are not related.Based on the research findings,the thesis provides some suggestions for the improvement of English teachers' intercultural communicative competence from the perspective of Ministry of Education,University authorities and College English teachers.
