In history the ancient Silk Road has made huge contributions to the social, economic and cultural development of the trading nations in Asia,Africa and Europe. In 2013 Chinese president Xi Jinping raised the initiative of jointly building the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road?hereinafter referred to as the Belt and Road?,which has received close attention and positive responses from all over the world.Translation of the Silk Road not only caters to foreign reader's interest, but also disseminates China's culture and policy to make it better understood by the world. Moreover, domestic translation and translation studies of the Silk Road are still rare.On account of this the excerpt?section 1.1-1.3,chapter 1?of the book Though the Silk Road was chosen as the source text by the author of the paper.By introducing theories of communication studies into translation studies,it is found that communication and translation are identical in essence:transmitting message via manipulation of symbols.Based on the clarification of the relation between the classic communication models and translation, the author of the paper argues that the elements exerting influence on translation include“communicator”?author of the source text and translators?,“message”?source texts?,“receiver”?target readers?,“noise”?any factor negatively influencing the understanding, conveying and receiving of the message?and“effect”?a translator's intended effect or purpose?,among which the last three elements have been analyzed in detail. To realize an efficient communication,a translator should reduce as much noise as possible, give substantial consideration to the receiver's cultural background, anticipation and aesthetics and do his utmost to achieve the translator's intended purpose. In light of this, translation skills such as amplification, omission, free translation and rewriting have been employed to fulfill the translation strategy previously made, that is domestication as a chief approach complemented by foreignization. The domestication strategy was employed to reduce the target reader's reading burden and cater to their aesthetics and the foreignization strategy to satisfy their reading anticipation and realize the translator's intended purpose of disseminating culture.
