Thomas Hardy(1840-1928)has a high reputation in the history of British literature and in the history of world literature. He is not only a brilliant novelist, but also a famous poet.He inherited and carried forward the literary tradition of the Victoria times. In his later years,he opened up the English literature of the twentieth century with his remarkable poems.Among all his poems,Poems of 1912-1913,a series of twenty-one mourning poems, are most extensively known. In Poems of 1912-1913,Hardy recalls the common experience with Emma and traces back to the good times of the past and dreams of seeing Emma again. But none of these can be realized. This thesis attempts to have an in-depth interpretation and systematic analysis of Poems of 1912-1913 by using Aristotle,Hegel, and Nietzsche's tragic theories so as to reveal the nature of tragedy. This study comes to a conclusion that being faced with his life tragedy, elaborated on the conflict between Dionysian and Apollonian spirits,Hardy tries to transcend the tragic sense by seeking a meaning in his future life.
