In Xinjiang, due to long-term contact, the Han and Uyghur ethnic groups have greatly influenced each other, forming an unbreakable bond, which may be described roughly as “there is a little of you in me and a little of me in you”.Chinese has exerted a large influence on the Uyghur language and Uyghur has also,in turm, exerted a certain influence on Chinese.A small number of loanwords from Uyghur have been borrowed into both Mandarin Chinese and the dialect of Chinese in Xinjiang.Uyghur has also influenced the latter on the phonological, semantic and syntactic levels. This thesis takes guidance from Marxist theory and method and builds on past scholars' research. It is based on the theories of Contact Linguistics,Descriptive Linguistics and Dialectology with the aim of investigating Uyghur loanwords in Modern Chinese, focusing on aspects such as the type of loanwords and their general characteristics, the reason behind borrowing and the channel through which loanwords were accepted, and the way in which Uyghur loanwords are “native” into Chinese. This thesis is comprised of four sections.Section One,the introductory section, briefly discusses the aim and significance of research, the theoretical background and current state of research. It also describes the research methodology and collection of linguistic data.Section Two focuses on the influence of Uyghur on Mandarin Chinese, describing the historical and cultural background behind the borrowing of Uyghur loanwords, the type of loanwords and their general characteristics.Section Three discusses the influence of Uyghur on the dialect of Chinese in Xinjiang, focusing chiefly on the type of loanwords and the overall influence of lexical borrowing.Section Four discusses the Chinese linguistic nativization of Uyghur loanwords, focusing on the nativization of phonology, lexicon and grammar. The final section is a conclusion, briefly summarizes this thesis' main findings, points of innovation and future prospects.
