Wen C.Fong is the important force in the western researchers of Chinese art history in the 20 th century,and he takes on a crucial role in the promotion of research,the establishment of methods and the exploration of practice.Through years of diligent research,he has established a set of effective methods for the study of Chinese painting,and gradually introduced the study of Chinese ancient painting into the field of systematic and scientific.At the same time,his method of study,like so many western art history methodology,there were certain phenomenon that hard to explain or some deficiencies in the use of the fine arts’ study,and it need the post-scholars integrate the embedded humanistic qualities of traditional Chinese painting into the study of Chinese art history on the basis of his theory.This paper aims to grip the core theory of Wen C.Fong’s art history study,“Structural analysis of visual images” method,as the basic research object,spreading the discusses about the origin of his theory,the construction of methodology system and the solution of a few case study in Chinese painting history,in order to make valuable research in the following several aspects.1.In the retrospective study of Wen C.Fong and other predecessors’ academic original literature,unraveling the flow relationship in traditional Stylistics,several of style theory and the “Structural analysis of visual images” theory,clarifying the venation in the study of style theory,solving the source about Wen C.Fong’s art history methodology.2.To grasp the theoretical system and central scope of Wen C.Fong’s art history research,and to clearly understand the core connotation of his research thought,so as to explain the denotatively performance in-depth when the method applying in the specific painting,and to construct the overall recognition space about Wen C.Fong’s art history research.3.Wen C.Fong’s “Structural analysis of visual images” theory establishes a set of effective observation methods for Chinese painting research.When researchers citing it for case study,those important issues that the one-way judgment for “benchmark works”,the linear application for scientific method and the subjective elimination for emotional factors cannot be ignored by researchers.This paper attempts to compare the “Structural analysis of visual images” theory with the traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy identification by muti-dimensional direction,accurately recognized their own gains and losses that the “Structural analysis of visual images” method from the Western and the traditional Chinese identification method in the Chinese art research,integrated the advantages of two methods in order to put forward feasible solution.
