Literature Review is an essential part of academic articles.However,there aren't enough researches on literature review,let alone researches on literature reviews of dissertations written by overseas students.Therefore,this article examined literature reviews written by foreign graduate students majoring in International Education in Chinese using the Schematic Structure of Literature Reviews proposed by Becky S.C.Kwan(2006)and Engagement System of Appraisal System proposed by Martin &White(2005).In addition,this article compared literature reviews written by foreign graduate students with Chinese graduate students majoring in International Education in Chinese to further explore the features of literature reviews written by foreign graduate students,so that teachers can use the conditions for reference during writing teaching of Chinese dissertation.Below are main research results of this article.For features of move structure,literature reviews written by foreign students didn't totally conform to The Schematic Structure of Literature Reviews proposed by Kwan,differences exist between them: there are two new strategies in literature reviews written by foreign students,which aren't included in the schematic structure proposed by Kwan,and three strategies included in the schematic structure proposed by Kwan aren't found in literature reviews written by foreign students.Among three moves,move 1‘Establishing a Territory' is the dominant element,move 2 ‘Establishing a niche' takes second place,and move 3‘Occupying the niche'only exists in a few dissertations.This phenomenon shows that a majority of overseas students just consider Literature Review Chapter as listing related researches,so only a part of foreign students evaluated pre-existing researches.For the usage of engagement resources,foreign students take Monogloss and Contract as dominant part and Heterogloss and Expend as supplementary part.Generally speaking,foreign students aren't apt to obviously and directly express their attitudes,especially negative attitudes,thus engagement resources such as Deny and Concur are not frequently used.They tend to choose implicit and positive resources,such as Pronounce and Endorse.Based on the research results,this article suggests that teachers should enhance genre awareness of foreign students during the teaching of academic writing and teach them how to use various engagement resources to align with readers.
