| Conceptual blending theory, put forward by Gills Fauconnier and Mark Turner, originates from mental space theory. It has become an integrated part in cognitive poetics since it appeared. It has a strong explanatory power to linguistic phenomena, because of which it is widely used for the study of literary texts. It involves four mental spaces including two input spaces, one generic space and one blended space. For the blending mechanism, some elements in two input spaces correspond with each other to form a cross-space mapping. Then elements from two input spaces are selectively projected to the blend in which composition, completion and elaboration help to generate an innovative structure called emergent structure..Classical Chinese poetry is rich in imagination. Thus, more and more scholars from home and abroad pay much attention to studying its application in classical Chinese poetry. However, previous studies lay emphasis on the interpretation of images or artistic conception or translation. There are few scholars exploring the blending processes in theme realization. Therefore, this thesis will take it as the entry point so as to explore the formation of themes in Liu Yuxi’s poetry. In the analysis of the classical Chinese poetry, the blending models concerned are respectively mirror network,single-scope network and double-scope network. In the mirror network, images in Liu Yuxi’s poetry constitute two input spaces with the same organizing frame. The elements in these two input spaces which are mapped with each other, are projected to the blended space to facilitate the formation of themes. The single-scope network can be used to explain the integration between abstract images and concrete images in Liu Yuxi’s poetry. The two input spaces have different organizing frames and only the frame of concrete images will be projected to the blended space as the basis for the interpretation of Liu Yuxi’s poetry themes. The input spaces of the double-scope networks also differ from each other in their organizing frames.Yet parts of the two frames are projected together to the blended space,in which the poetry themes are generated through the operations of composition, completion and elaboration. The three networks of conceptual blending theory successfully account for the blending processes of Liu Yuxi’s poetry themes. It can not only help readers have a better understanding of the poetry themes, but also open up a new path for the interpretation of Chinese classical poetry, which reflects better theoretical and practical properties. |
