The source text of this translation practice report is selected from Ashghal PW Septic & Storm Water Design, which is mainly concerned about the drainage systems of public foul sewerage, surface water and ground water. It offers information about the septic & storm water design for developers, and provides valuable references for developers of capital construction. At the same time, the translator can obtain translation experience and translation skills by this translation practice. This report analyzed the main linguistic features of EST manual, which distinguish it from other types of texts. In terms of the content of source text, mood and voice are the typical features for this manual. To be specific, modal verbs and passive voice are widely used in the original text. Therefore, the translator should place great importance on the study of modal verbs and passive voice both in English and Chinese languages.By comparing the mood in English and Chinese languages in this report,we can find that modal verbs are the main expressions of mood in both languages.Meanwhile,English and Chinese mood can be divided into epistemic, deontic and dynamic modality, and a modal verb corresponds to different modality meanings in the context.Besides, active voice is often used in Chinese, while passive voice is typical in this English manual. This translation report has discussed the application of several translation strategies and methods of modal verbs and passive voice. We can identify the modality meanings of modal verbs as epistemic, deontic and dynamic modality, and translate the passive voice into active voice, passive voice with formal markers and non-passive voice expressions. The author expects that this report would provide translation learners with some references and enhance their translation capacity during their translation process.
