A Multimodal Discourse Analysis Of The Representation Of Political Hero In Media

Aung San Suu Kyi,the Burmese democracy leader who was released in 2010,was the focus of international debate,and Suu Kyi's media image was fully displayed.In order to investigate the dynamic process of Suu Kyi's media image in the western mainstream media,this paper takes Suu Kyi's cover stories and images after her release in Time.Using the Three-dimensional Framework proposed by Fairclough,the systemic-functional grammar of Halliday are used as analytic tools,and the visual grammar of Kress and van Leeuwen is combined.To analyse Suu Kyi's media image in Time and explore the different construction of the media image of national leaders in different stages by representative media.The paper consists of introduction,three chapters and conclusions.The introduction mainly introduces the research background and problems of the paper,sketches the domestic and foreign research status,and briefly expounds the significance of this research.The first chapter introduces the development background,basic concepts and research methods of Fairclough's Three-dimensional Framework,Halliday's systemic-functional grammar,and Kress and van Leeuwen's visual grammar.The internal relationship among the three methods on which the research is based are clarified.The research material is also introduced.The second chapter analyses the language modal and image mode of the discourse of Time based on the material collected in this paper.The purpose of the analysis of language modes is to reveal the textual features of words and sentences from three angles: transitivity,mood and modality,thematic system.The purpose of image modal analysis is to explore the image meaning of Visual grammar from three aspects: narrative reproduction,degree of intervention and overall layout.The third chapter explores the cultural connotation and ideological factors hidden behind the text with the perspective of critical discourse analysis from the perspective of discourse practice and social practice.The conclusion part summarizes the two findings of this thesis.One is the strategy of shaping the media image of Suu Kyi as "political hero".The second is the ideological bias of the western mainstream media,the complex political media ecology and the construction path,so as to help the readers to cultivate the critical reading consciousness,and point out the shortcomings of this paper.
