The Relationship Between Teachers’ Immediacy And Uzbek Students’ Willingness To Communicate In English (EFL) Classrooms:A Case Study Of Andijan State University,Uzbekistan

Abstract/Summary:
This study was designed to examine the relationship between teachers’ verbal and nonverbal immediacy and Uzbek students’ willingness to communicate in English(FL)in the English Oral classes.Researches on WTC studied in a foreign language learning context have been conducted in a number of countries,as well as Korea,Japan,Turkey,Taiwan,China,Iran.However,there is not any research specially address teacher immediacy effect or enhance students’ willingness to communicate in English classroom in Uzbekistan.A quantitative research method was adopted in this study.A sample of 132(N=132)students were surveyed from Andijan State University in Uzbekistan.The participants were asked to respond to three types of instruments which are: “Willingness to communicate measure”,“Verbal immediacy measure”,“Nonverbal immediacy measure”.Descriptive statistics,Independent sample t-test,one-way ANOVA and Spearman rho correlations were computed to answer the research questions proposed in this study.The results of this study revealed that teachers’ verbal immediacy behaviors were positively correlated at a statistically significant level with students’ willingness to communicate in English classes.Similarly,teachers’ nonverbal immediacy behaviors were significantly positively correlated with students’ willingness to communicate in English classes.General results of student perceptions of teachers’ immediacy were significant.Furthermore,gender differences were not significant and grade differences for verbal immediacy were significant.
