Since 1937,Japan launched The Japanese war of aggression against China, especially after it declared war on the United States in 1941 and launched the Pacific War,as the war situation deteriorated, soldiers suffered heavy casualties.By 1942,it was difficult for the stretched forces to maintain their operations in the vast Pacific. The Japanese Military Service Act stipulates that students of universities, colleges, and specialized schools can be exempted from military service by the age of 26(In 1939,due to the excessive consumption of the Chinese battlefield, the age has been reduced by two to three years of age according to academic qualifications). However,in 1941,the school system was shortened by 3 months, and students who graduated in advance were subjected to temporary conscription examinations. Those who passed were enlisted in February of the following year. And then,in 1942,the school system was shortened by three months.Students were allowed to graduate six months in advance and enlist in October. In 1943,with the further deterioration of the war situation, the Tojo Cabinet at that time promulgated the “Temporary Special Case for Temporary Collection of Admission to Schools” on October 1st,announcing the withdrawal of the delayed recruitment policies of liberal arts students in colleges and universities other than science and engineering and education departments.(Some of Agriculture, such as agricultural economics and agricultural sciences, have also been classified)Meanwhile, the temporary recruitment inspection rules are implemented, which stipulates that the qualified candidates, except those with open TB,will be recruited in December. These highly-educated apprentices have become highly qualified personnel in the Army, are specially employed as non-commissioned officers, special aggressor candidates,or become preparatory students for the Navy and prepare students to supplement the junior commanders and non-commissioned officers of field commanders.“gakuto syutsugin” continued to lose from 1943 to 1945 and approximately 300,000 people joined the army.In the deteriorating war situation, the “special attack operations” of “all members” and the malnutrition and the spread of epidemics which caused by insufficient supplies caused a large number of war dead. There are still no exact figures as to how many people died in combat. However, from the data of 70% of the army and 85% of the Navy's student soldiers,it is believed that a large number of apprentices eventually became the victim of the war.According to the statistics of the Ministry of Education, the admission rate for Japanese higher education institutions(including universities, technical colleges, and old institutions of higher learning)was 5%,and most of the students were from wealthy classes. These elites who were supposed to be managers of the future society are dead on the battlefield.Undoubtedly, they have great influence on Japanese society. Then after the war, schools and students survivors worked out the student's notes, and especially compiled the books of those students who had lost their battles to express their regrets and condolences for the dead.Japanese scholars also use these memos and survivors' memoirs to study "gakuto syutsugin" and then reflect on the impact of war on Japan.
