David Faure's study of the lineage of South China is a hot topic in the historiography field.The Emperor and Ancestor: State and Lineage of South China and Social and Ritual of the Ming and Qing Dynasties published in 2010 and 2016 were both hotly debated in China.This paper takes the study of the lineage in south china in these two books by David Faure as the object.Through summarization and comparison to expounds the methodological origin,paradigm characteristics and research directions of David Faure's study.The first part discussed the methodological origins of Dr.Faure's study of the lineage in South China,namely,the lineage mode of Maurice Friedman,Skinnerian Model and the conscious model of Barbara E.Ward.The second part is based on David.Faure's two books and analyzes the main points of the lineage study in south china,explains the lineage in south china from the ritual marker of the lineage development process,and the relationship between lineage and local social and country.The final part is the rethinking of David Faure's lineage study of the South China.Through the analysis of the David Faure's lineage study of South China to make a more objective assessment of it.The reason that David Faure's lineage study in South China can cause heated discussion is because he combines the traditional Chinese historiography research with overseas sinology research and provide a platform to exchange studies between Chinese and foreign Chinese researchers;on the other hand,it is due to the theoretical methods and the paradigm of influence that David Faure used in studying the lineage in South China.His took the individual lineage organization as the research object and his research seeks to reveal how lineage became part of the country in it development process and explain how unconstrained traditional Chinese society maintains unity in constant fluctuations.
