Study On The Countermeasures Of Overtranslation And Undertranslation In Science And Technology Translation

Overtranslation and undertranslation are the common problems in translation.With unique stylistic features,science and technology texts range widely from natural science to social science.Due to the differences between English and Chinese languages,and also the element of translator etc.,overtranslation and undertraslation may be found in words,sentences,and style of writings in science and technology translation.In this article,the author focused on overtanslation and undertranslation in the process of translating English of science and technology into Chinese.On the basis of the task text translated,the author analyzed the causes of overtanslation and undertranslation during the translation,and then presented their expressions in science and technology texts.Lastly,countermeasures for overtanslation and undertranslation in translation of science and technology texts were proposed with some examples.It is found that in translation of science and technology text,the factors that result in overtranslation and undertranslation could be concluded as following: the differences of two cultures,two distinct language systems and translator elements.The two problems can be reflected on words,sentences and style of writings in English texts of science and technology.In order to avoid overtranslation and undertranslation,we should adopt four strategies: generalization and concretion,naturalization,supplement and literal translation,by which we could make the translation as much equal as the original text to improve the quality of translation.They are also the effective ways to present the translation of science and technology texts with better standardization,accuracy and fluency.
