A Dream of Red Mansions contains rich elements of traditional Chinese Opera.This paper conducts a comparative research on English translation of traditional Chinese Opera elements in A Dream of Red Mansions,listing systematically and thoroughly all the elements of traditional Chinese Opera in the novel.From the angle of comparative English translation,this paper analyzes and probes the difference in translation styles and strategies on traditional Chinese Opera elements between the two English translation versions made by Yang Hsien-Yi and Hawkes respectively.Meanwhile,the paper tries to clarify the important roles of the two versions in cross-cultural communication of A Dream of Red Mansions.This paper consists of introduction,a main body and conclusion.The introduction mainly discusses the theoretical significance of the paper,sorting out the research status quo,briefing the main points of view,clarifying the research object and scope,the research ideas and methods,and analyzing the innovative points and deficiencies of the paper.The main body is divided into four chapters.The first three chapters are respectively titled “Chinese Opera Repertoire” “Chinese Opera Lyrics” and “Names and Roles of Chinese Opera Actresses” to analyze and compare the similarities and differences between the two English versions of A Dream of Red Mansions,and explore their translation strategies.The fourth chapter comprehensively elaborates the translation strategies adopted by the two English versions on the elements of traditional Chinese Opera in A Dream of Red Mansions,and deeply seach out the different cultural positions and communication intentions of different translators hidden behind the translation strategies.The conclusion part analyzes the profound influence of the two English versions in the process ofcross-cultural translation practice.This paper involves many aspects such as literature,drama,history,social culture and communication study.The paper firstly is based on close reading of the novel to explore the various elements of traditional Chinese Opera in details in A Dream of Red Mansions.Secondly the paper adopts the comparative method of literary translation,that is,to carry out a comparative research on the English translation of Chinese traditional Opera elements by the theories and methods of comparative literature,in order to explore the different interpretation tendencies and translation intentions of the two translators and to evaluate their important contributions made in the field of cross-cultural communication.
