Picture book reading is one of the main forms of reading for children. It can help to improve reading skills. In China, first graders begin to enter the normal literacy education stage. How to use picture books to read and promote children’s new words learning has become an important research direction.Research shows that children learn new vocabulary mainly during reading. This way of learning new vocabulary is called incidental vocabulary learning. One study has proven in Chinese reading that first graders have incidental vocabulary learning effect in picture book reading, and are influenced by the components of the Chinese character(the phonetic and semantic radicals). This study will further examine the role of phonetic radicals.A large number of studies in intentional vocabulary learning found that there is a phonetic-radicals’ regularity effect(phonetic correspondence between radical and character)in first graders.Whether or not there is a regularity effect in the incidental vocabulary in picture book reading is the first concern in this study. Some studies have found that the phonetic-radicals’ regularity effect of new word learning is related with repeated reading. And repeated reading can promote the learning of irregular words.Whether the regularity effect is affected by repeated reading is the second concern in this study. This study uses eye tracking technology to collect eye movement data during the learning process, and explores the relationship between learning effects and fixation patterns, which is the third concern in this study. In this study,32 first graders recognize the target words’ phonetic radicals and don’t recognize the target words. In the recording of the Tobii T300 eye tracker,32 first graders need to finish reading stories learning tasks which includes 32 target words.Tasks include the semantics selection test and the pronunciation test. The experiment was carried out by using two factors(phonetic radicals regular words, phonetic radicals irregular words)and(repeated reading for three times,no repeated reading)which is a within subjects design research. The results are as followings:1.Picture book reading can promote the first graders to learn new words.2.The learning process is influenced by phonetic-radicals’ regularity effect and repeated reading.3.Children’s gaze model and learning effects are closely related.
