In spite of the emancipation of the slaves and the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments, the blacks were still denied equal civil and political rights after the American Civil War.More importantly, lynchings, characterized by burning, dismemberment, hanging, shooting, and castration or other brutal methods of physical torture, spread throughout the country.Thousands of blacks, regardless of gender or age, were lynched during the period between the Civil War and World War?.The violent and public act of torture has inflicted immeasurable trauma on the entire African American community.Nevertheless, the perpetrators seldom received punishment or conviction, and were surprisingly tolerated by state and federal authorities for a long period. Thus, this paper is mainly intended to explore the factors that caused the widespread barbarity from two parts in detail-objective causes and subjective causes. The objective causes include historical, economic and social factors, and the subjective causes involve psychological fear, family education and people's ignorance. The paper argues that the prevalence of black lynchings in America cannot simply be attributed to one certain aspect, and that only when taken these two parts into consideration can people have a thorough and clear understanding of the neglected history of racial terror and inequality it has created.Based on the research, the paper draws a conclusion that the pain of the past should be honestly and soberly examined. There is a pressing need to challenge the absence of recognition on the subject of lynching in the public space. Therefore, the paper further puts forward three ways for Americans to recover from tragic histories of racial violence and terrorism and to obtain truly equal justice.Firstly, all classes of white people are supposed to respect the rights of other human beings regardless of their skin;secondly, people must keep holy respect for the law;thirdly, monuments and memorials should be built to commemorate lynching and arouse public recognition.Only in so doing can America heal the traumatic wounds that lynchings inflicted on the entire African American community, even the whole nation.
