English practical writing,closely related to our daily life,plays an important part in senior high school English writing teaching.However,the practical writing situation of senior high school students is not optimistic.Therefore,educators continue exploring new teaching methods to help students master practical writing.In 1981,Krashen put forward narrow reading which has been paid more attention by linguistics researchers in recent years,but the researchers mainly focus on the influence of narrow reading on reading or vocabulary and the elaboration of narrow reading theory.This study attempts to combine narrow reading with practical writing.Students read the materials on the same topic before writing so that they can acquire relevant knowledge and apply it to writing so as to improve their English practical writing.And it is expected that some new ideas can be provided for the teaching of English practical writing in senior high school.The thesis aims to explore whether narrow reading practice can improve senior high school students' practical writing ability and whether it can improve students' confidence in practical writing.From September to November,2017,the author conducted a 10-week experimental study in a middle school in Heyuan,Guangdong Province.There were104 participants selected from two parallel classes in Senior one.One class was chosen as the experimental group,the other as control group.The experimental class adopts the teaching of narrow reading practice before writing,and the control class adopts the teaching of regular reading before writing.Through SPSS,the author contrasts the results of writing and questionnaire before and after the experiment,and draws the conclusion of the experiment.The experimental results show that: firstly,narrow reading practice before writing can effectively improve the students' practical writing ability;secondly,after narrow reading practice,students' confidence in practical writing is improved.The research results prove that the application of narrow reading in senior high school English practical writing teaching is effective.This research has some pedagogical implications for English practical writing teaching.At last,the paper points out thelimitations of the research,which provides the direction for further research.
