College English,a compulsory course in college,is a predominant way for students to acquire English knowledge and skills during their stage of university. However, the current content of undergraduate English in China is subject to the restriction and influence of exam-oriented teaching.Except for extensive training in English reading and writing, nothing else have occurred in the past few decades. The college English teaching content out-of-date has long been unable to catch up with the high pace of society and failed to cover the political, economic and cultural needs in China. The old-fashion English teaching contents also cannot satisfy the urgent demand of China's reform and opening up,in which English is a basic reqirement for embracing and communicating with the outside world. In order to completely change the backward situation,a revolution in English content is necessary to update the English teaching and make English course more efficient and practical, and most importantly much easier for students to study. At present, the traditional teaching content is out-of-date for the rapid development of society. The reading-oriented English teaching is difficult to educate students with excellent capability in communication. The comprehensive capabilities in listening, speaking, reading and writing is the primary aim of college English teaching and the teaching content should be balanced as well.Additionally,a language deeply roots in its related culture and only the way of thinking in English can understand English better. Therefore, the introduction of English culture and English mind training also should be important element of college English teaching. In this thesis, the English teaching in Hubei College of W was thoroughly studied via different methods, including campus investigation, literature search and case analysis etc. Some typical problems were found existing in English teaching on the basis of the author's teaching experience in W.In teaching practice, the facilities, teaching administration, content and methods connect with each other, profoundly influence the final teaching achievements. Moreover, the conventional teaching methods, limited teaching time and even the poor enrollment would reduce the quality of college English teaching.Hence, herein we discussed the teaching reform trend based on teaching content with taking the teaching administration, faculty, teaching methods into consideration for a firm conclusion. The first three chapters mainly described the status quo of the college English teaching from textbook selection, teaching emphasis and class period division etc.In chapter 4,some typical problems in English teaching content were concluded from a general analysis of the status quo such as the limited English culture introduction, poor English mind training, unbalanced teaching sections(listening, speaking, reading and writing),deficient language practice and so forth. In chapter 5,we mainly discussed the causes of these problem, including the test-oriented teaching content which is separated from the social need, inappropriate textbooks, stereotyped teaching methods, limited hardware and facilities. Finally, the reasonable suggestions for tackling the problems were proposed,e.g.,increasing the class hours in English culture introduction, emphasizing the English mind training, balancing the development of English capacities(listening, speaking, reading and writing),adding the language practice and optimizing the textbooks and other supporting materials etc.
