The thesis,in terms of functions, provides an analysis of the 11 pronominal adverbs that introduce relative clauses in the King James Bible(KJV).Pronominal adverbs are functionally equivalent to prepositional phrases, and such adverbs are combinations of here/there/where and prepositions such as hereof/thereon/whereat.Many pronominal adverbs are employed to introduce relative clauses in KJV,which play the same role as relative adverbs in Modern English do.First, the thesis makes an analysis of the origin of pronominal adverbs with the help of Noam Chomsky's X' theory and WH-movement.Second,based on X' theory and WH-movement,syntactical study is carried out of the relative clauses introduced by these adverbs, and corresponding tree structures are made according to every example given in the thesis.By tree structures,an analysis is made of how pronominal adverbs function in relative clauses. Finally,an innovation made by the thesis is that a comparative analysis was conducted between 1)where-adverbs that introduce relative clauses and the corresponding prepositional phrases and 2)such where-adverbs and the corresponding here-/ there-adverbs.Comparative structures are mapped with the help of tree structures to illustrate the properties of where-adverbs.
