With the implementation of the policy of reform and opening-up,more and more traditional Chinese cultures are going abroad, intertwined with others, which results in increasing cultural exchanges.Traditional Chinese opera is bestowed with music, dancing, clothing and aesthetics.Recently there has been an amount of papers concerning traditional operas published. The translation material of this report was selected from Chapter 2 “The History of Taizhou Local Opera” and Chapter 3 “The Content and Features of Taizhou Local Opera” in the book Taizhou Local Opera, aiming to make contributions to spreading Chinese traditional opera by carrying out a research on translating traditional Chinese opera.Due to many traditional Chinese opera terms, opera names and long sentences, the author employs translation methods like amplification, substitution, and explanation to address word difficulties with the guidance of Skopos theory, relative texts and experts. And sentence division, inversion, subject addition and omission are used for long sentences. Thus, the translation is true to the original text, focusing on the purpose of translation so as to provide a coherent and culture-oriented version for readers and meet the demand of communication. In order to produce a translation work with idiomatic fluency, proper elegance and professional precision, the translator should poss ess not only high-level bilingual competence but a broad range of knowledge through practice and reflection. Also the author hopes this thesis can offer good reference for translators who will be involved in such translation projects.
