Different from the common opinions,in George Orwell’ s masterpiece Nineteen Eighty-Four,Winston Smith, who fights against totalitarianism but fails at last,is not a pure rebel against Big Brother and the Party. He has got a dual identity deep inside, which makes him a rebel and an advocator rolled into one.Beneath the conscious mind of rebellion, his unconsciousness leads him to be an advocator of Big Brother. The first part of the novel shows the first life stage Winston goes through,in which he is a man of his desire and has already shown his hesitation in his opposite attitudes toward the totalitarian society, revealed by his inner thoughts about Julia and O’Brien.Winston then focuses more on politics than on his own desires.Accompanied by Julia,Winston joins an underground organization named The Brotherhood. He shows undoubted faith in O’Brien and deems himself as a “dead man ” so that he is able to exert himself to fight the Party without an attachment to the world. However,to Winston, justice means violence must be met by violence, which is just in accord with the violence principle promoted by Big Brother. The final part of the novel describes the identity of Winston after O’Brien’ s torture.Winston was remolded and became a true advocator of Big Brother. Thanks to the doublethink, the personality of a rebel still exists in his unconsciousness.Orwell’ s central concern appears to be thinking about both politics and human nature.Human nature seems to be the eternal combat between the spirit of defiance and compromise. The split personality of Winston reveals the abnormality of totalitarian society,a society that unscrupulously distorted common law and extinguished human nature.People have to be on the alert of it.
