(?) Ca is a Chinese-Vietnamese dictionary compiled by Vietnamese scholars in 19th century,which is of great value in the research on Chinese phonology through transliteration.Four issues are settled in this paper by data-building,statistics,analysis and induction before our farther explanation,comparison and differentiation with chronically and synchronically analysis method:a.why (?) is a first hand research material;b.which method did the scholars chose for phonetic annotation of Chinese Character during their compiling (?);c.digging out the mechanism of phonetic transcription between Chinese and Vietnamese,especially the changes between these two phonetic systems during phonetic transcription;d.digging out the feature of the phonetic system of (?) and its research value on Chinese phonetic research history.Apart from the conclusion,there are mainly five chapters in this paper in the line of four issues above:Chapter 1,introduction.Reviews on the research results of Vietmese Chinese characters under the scope of East Asia linguistics;Chapter 2,research on the different versions of (?) and its linguistic research value in the field of the historical research of Chinese;Chapter 3,three methods of phonetic notation employed in (?):the mainly used one is the traditional method of indicating the pronunciation of a Chinese character,then Fanqie and tone-noting as the last;Chapter 4,through statistics and analysis,we inducted the phonetic system of (?) transcribed by the traditional method.We tried to dig out the mechanism of phonetic transcription:exceptions exist beyond the main rule,especially the initials and finals,while tones follow the rule well;Chapter 5,here are some of our conclusions:the phonetic system reflected in (?) is a man-made one,which means it doesn’t belong to a specific place or time but a produce of combination of Middle Chinese and local Vietnamese,for instance,the tones from eight in Chinese to six in Vietnamese;Chapter 6,conclusion.We make a summary of the whole paper and point out some defects that need further research in the future.
