Thomas Hardy is a well-known British novelist and poet in the worldwide,Rich Creations have laid a monumental and legendary position for him in the literary world.Hardy devoted his life to writing novels of "character and environment".The Mayor of Casterbridge was one of his masterpieces.Its outstanding realistic brushwork,fierce and complicated contradictions and full-fleshed characters have attracted domestic and foreign guests.Scholars have a strong interest in research.More scholars praise it as one of Hardy's finest works.The Mayor of Casterbridge described a shift from agricultural civilization to industrial civilization.The destiny of the tragedy and joy of the characters highlights Hardy his own ethical thinking and ethical outlook.Therefore,he uses the method of ethical literary criticism.The study of The Mayor of Casterbridge is feasible.In addition,this article intends to combine spatial criticism with the concept of "space"in an ethical way,and consider the relationship between "space" and "ethics".Through the combination of spatial criticism and ethical criticism,the author starts with the shift from space to the ethical identity of the characters,expounding the ethical dilemmas and ethical choices faced by the characters in the novel,Analyzing the causes of each person's eventual culmination of different ethical outcomes,so as to profoundly grasp Hardy's own ethical and moral ideas.The full text includes three parts:introduction,topic discussion and conclusion.The first part is the introduction part,introducing the achievements of Hardy's literary creation,collecting and sorting out the research status at home and abroad,and finally expounding the research ideas,difficulties,innovations and research methods.The second part is the theme part of the paper,divided into three chapters.It is devoted to exploring the changes in the spatial structure,the changes in the ethical identities of the characters,the ethical dilemmas faced,and the ethical choices taken.The first chapter starts with the change of space and the change of ethical identity,and analyzes the changes in the ethical identity of Henchard and Faffrey in the change of family space and social space,and concludes that the two people's ethical identities are very different.The second chapter analyzes the ethical dilemmas people face in different spaces.This chapter deals with more types of space,including rural space,urban space and female space,and the power space derived from the relationship between space and power.In the rural space,to explore the existential dilemma faced by Henchard and Russeta;in the urban space,to explore the conflict between power and emotions faced by two men,Henchard and Faffrey,as foreigners;In women's space,they mainly started with Elizabeth and Russeta,and analyzed their conflict of female freedom under the patriarchal system.The content of the third chapter is corresponding to the second chapter.It mainly elaborates the corresponding ethical choices made by the characters in the novel in the face of ethical dilemmas.Their differences in ethical choices reveal the very different ethical ideologies and consciousness of the characters.It is precisely because of the ethical choices under the influence of different thoughts that each of them finally came to a different ethical end.For example,in the female space,Elizabeth chose to resist and chose to challenge the fatherhood authority.In the end,she realized the identity construction of independent women.On the other hand,in the case of Rosetta,she always chose to live in the authority of men in the attachment of love and desire.Finally,she lost her self to a tragic ending.The third part is the conclusion part.After combing the structure and content of this article,it analyzes the function and role of a space" in "ethics",grasps and summarizes Hardy's own ethics,and elaborates The Mayor of Casterbridge.The important role and value in Hardy's works have led to the sublimation of the ideological dimension of this article.
