The Tragic Expression In The Spatial Narrative

Tragedy has always been a long lasting theme in the history of arts.Different from pessimism that makes people desperate,tragic spirit usually makes people resolve to fight against the doomed fate.Yan Peiming’s paintings are famous for their tragic spirit.By giving people a strong contrast between black and white in the vision of the picture,Yan Peiming has successfully inserted tragic messages in his works and established himself as a master of spatial narrative in paintings.While space has always been an object of attention,"spatial narrative" is not fully discussed in the researches of fine arts and paintings.It is undoubtedly valuable to the study of aesthetics creations when spatial narrative,an narrative skill different from writing is introduced.In the traditional concepts of narratology and aesthetics,only Chen Xiaohui and Yu Diyong put forward a relative mature definition of "narrative space".This paper will explore the tragic images in Yan Peiming’s paintings in perspectives of "psychological space"and "social space" combining with "privacy" and "cosmopolitan" in Yan Peiming’s works.By analyzing Yan Peiming’s personal background and artistic experience,the paper is trying to elaborate Yan Peiming’s narrative space,the soil where his creative ideas and characteristics emerges,so as to better understand how the cultural context has influenced the artist’s artistic style and where the hidden tragic imagery and the artist’s subjective narrative intention come from.This paper is divided into four chapters.Chapter I examines the origin of Yan Peiming’s tragic narrative space by analyzing Yan Peiming’s creation background and life experience.Chapter Ⅱ explores with narratology the source and interest of Yan Peiming’s artistic creation.Chapter Ⅲ,the focus of this paper,discusses Yan Peiming’s artistic creation of the space shaping techniques and explains Yan Peiming’s artistic creation of human consciousness and his way of expressing sympathy and compassion.Chapter IV provides a profound thinking of Yan Peiming’s works and its enlightenment,and Yan Peiming’s purpose in selecting the subject material and the grafting of Chinese artist identity abroad.
