A Study On The Reproduction Of Foregrounding Language In The English Translation Of Chang Hen Ge

As an inter-discipline mediating linguistics and literary critics,literary stylistics is aimed at studying how language choices affect the thematic meaning and aesthetic effects of literary works.The term "foregrounding" is an important concept from literary stylistics,meaning that writers deliberately violate language norms and use these deviant expressions to achieve certain aesthetic significance.The translation of foregrounding is the key to assess whether the stylistic features of original works are successfully reproduced.The application of literary stylistics and foregrounding theory to fiction translation will give translators a more systematic and scientific understanding of the original work,thereby avoiding impressionistic and subjective interpretation.Foregrounding theory is rooted in Russian Formalism and being introduced into translation practice and translation studies by the American scholar Professor Ye Zinan.Based on Leech’s foregrounding classification and Ye Zinan’s foregrounding theory,the thesis attempts to analyze Wang Anyi’s novel Chang Hen Ge from two accordingly respects:parallelism and deviation.After a comprehensive analysis,the study finds three stylistic features of Wang Anyi’s writing style:preference to abstract language;argumentative writing during narration;language of highly literariness and poetic values.To achieve her pursuit of language art,Wang Anyi creates a lot of syntagmatic foregrounding language like repetition,juxtaposition and parallel structure;and there also exists paradigmatic foregrounding phenomenon that covers the phonological,lexical,syntactic,semantic and discourse level.The thesis tries to solve two questions:How is the foregrounding language demonstrated in the original text?How does the translator reproduce the foregrounded language in translation with different translation techniques?The study finds that the translator adopts a series of translation techniques to reproduce the foregrounding language.For parallelism,the translator usually adopts the methods of direct rendering and omission.When dealing with deviation in lexicon,semantic and discourse,he boldly uses integrated translation methods like dynamic imitation,compensation and rewriting.Through the comparison between the original work and translated work,the thesis explores the feasibility of applying foregrounding theory into fiction translation studies.
