Listening,speaking,reading,and writing are four basic skills in English study,listening skill is relatively difficult for all students.Chinese English teachers have paid attention to writing and reading for a long time,however speaking and listening are neglected.But in the practical use of language,listening and speaking are playing a critical role,it is an essential way for us to receive information and express ideas.With the effect of economic globalization,great attention has been paid to the study of English,especially speaking and listening.However,how to improve English listening skills effectively,make students have more interesting in studying English listening is a common problem for us.And how to overcome problems about pronunciation,grammar,vocabulary,culture and teach practical knowledge in English listening class is a hot issue for English teaching research.After studying the current situation of English listening teaching and studying in the Northwest Minzu University,the author tried to use VOA English news as auxiliary material,which is closely related to modern people's life,applied in college English listening class.And conducted the experiment with the help of the Schema Theory and Metacognition.In order to give students more practical knowledge and get them interested in studying,then increase the English listening ability.The author chose two non-English major classes,B7 and B8 from the university as the subject of the experiment.Students were asked to finish the questionnaire about the current situation of college English listening study,such as teaching content,teaching method,major problems and students' view about VOA English news.After the pre-test,the author made sure the listening ability of the two classes are almost same,then added VOA English news to the experimental class.In the experimental class,except for some important parts in the text,make sure students listen to VOA English news at least 15 minutes every time,and with the guide of the Schema Theory and Metacognition.After one semester studying students of two classes were asked to do a post-test.All the data in the experiment were analyzed by SPSS software.According to the analyzed data,the author found that the English listening ability of experimental class were increased.The experiment proved the VOA English news as supplementary material for college English listening class,with the guide of Schema theory and Metacognition,students improved their English listening ability,and they have more interesting in English listening study.And after the experiment,the author summarized some strategies and advice for VOA English news teaching,hope this could offer some help to college English listening teaching.
