A Report On The English Translation Of Popular Science Books In TCM

With the rise of China and the increasingly close cultural exchanges between China and the West,traditional Chinese medicine(TCM),as a treasure of Chinese culture,has aroused more and more western readers' interest.This paper,taking the English translation of An Easy Introduction to Traditional Chinese Medicine as an example,conducts research on English translation of popular science books in TCM.Firstly,this paper introduces the background of the research,analyzes the current research status of TCM English translation and the significance of translation text.Secondly,it illustrates how to prepare for the translation of popular science books in TCM in three aspects,namely the analysis of the text,the study of TCM English translation and other translation preparations.Then the paper illustrates the misconceptions and the problems that might arise in the English translation of popular science books in TCM from the perspectives of comprehension of the source text,expression in the target language and TCM linguistic features.This paper introduces the translation principles of TCM terminology,including the conventional principle,the natural principle,the ethnic principle and the multi-method principle.Besides,the paper demonstrates translation methods of TCM terminology,including transliteration,literal translation,liberal translation,morpheme translation and analyzes the English translation of terms of philosophical concepts,Chinese medicine and formulas.In the English translation of the sentences,it discusses how to adopt appropriate translation methods to translate oral language,long sentences,neat sentences.The paper aims not only to give readers an understanding of the linguistic features and English translation methods of popular science books in TCM but also to promote the dissemination of TCM culture in the west.
