The development of blue in painting is inseparable from its changes in different periods.From natural mineral and plant pigments to synthetic pigments,the development history of blue from ancient to present is traceable.Each stage of the change of visual experience and color theory,people's understanding of color is changing too.Color theory often fails to fully explain the characteristics of color and the the painter's construction of color in artwork.Color not only influenced by different concept of the time,people's faith as well as the limitation of color media,and many other factors and constraints.And it is closely linked with the painter's visual inquiry and interpretation,which is also connected with their own independent path.This thesis focuses on the western painting,especially the study of the blue in the oil painting.With the different stage of color production,I focus on studying the change of the blue on artists' palette,its the usage during each period,as well as the development of science and technology of paints.Trying to make a relatively comprehensive analysis of the use of blue in various periods,and the different functions presented in artwork.On the basis of the framework built by color history,studying the present of blue color's usage,its social background,the color aesthetic tendency of individual artist,and the choice of each art genre.It will deepen our understanding of the color of painting by all means.
