The copybook making trend in calligraphy history derived from Tang Dynasty an d went popular in Song Dynasty, eventually form the Copybook Study. The study for stone tablets' writing gained its popularity in Qing Dynasty, which formed the Tablet Study.Tablets and copybooks together made up the Chinese calligraphy tradition, eac h with different functions and aesthetic characteristics. It is hard to determine which o ne is taking the prominent place, thus extracting the advantages from each should be t he proper way of calligraphy learning. The argument between copybooks and tablets in Qing dynasty is the something r esulted from the specific historical stage, even if the “Tablet Party” finally prevailed, but in terms of practical working, the two branches actually learned from each other a nd blend into one, creating a new writing style. From the works of representative calli graphers at that time, the combination of both was already an irresistible historical tre nd.This thesis is trying to explore the reason why the copybook study declined, start ing from looking at the general situation of copybook and tablet study in Qing dynasty, and dressing out the timeline of the development of tablet study from Fu Shan who fi rstly started the study to Ruan Yuanbao who made great contribution in developing it,until Kang Youwei's time when it reached its peak. Also this thesis is going to analysi s the pros and cons for each study and elaborate on that, taking examples of calligraph ers who successfully combined the features from both copybooks and tablets, and con cluding the inspirations that blending copybooks and tablets might have for present ca lligraphy art in three potential aspects.Hopefully this would provide new perceptions for calligraphy learning and practicing.
