The experimental theatre that rose in the 80 s has gone through a brilliant journey.Under the influence and guide of the modern western theatre theory,a group of theatre creator conducts a comprehensive reformation in the text content and the stage imagery of the Chinese theatre with the experimental spirit.Modernity and theatricality become a general pursuit for the creators.In the history of the Chinese experimental theatre,Gu Yian is one of the inevitable directors who did exceptionally well in the experimental territory.His Owl in the House made a stir in 1989 for its progressive environmental theatre mode.Afterward,he stays a relaxed attitude and fades out from the public,only keeping to generate a series of experimental works in the campus.By the space design and the atmosphere in the theatre,the act that established in the physical condition and the communication with the spect-actor,he builds his own artistic style of brief,sexy concerning the physical condition,immersion,energy field along with the sense of ceremony.This essay will trace the creation experience of Gu Yian,using the Owl in the House as a typical case as well as his other works to analyze the character of his works and his aesthetic aspiration.Besides,his localization strategy of environmental theatre appears not only a necessary amendment to the history of environmental theatre,but also providing experience for the future development of Chinese theatre to some degree.
