A marked achievement has been made in the recent years in higher vocational English teaching,but there are also some problems in it.Vocational English teachers are seeking ways to improve the effectiveness of English teaching.Previous studies have shown that double translation can promote second language acquisition and we find it quite necessary to apply double translation in higher vocational English teaching.This study based on the theories of language transfer,contrastive analysis,error analysis,the depth of processing hypothesis and drive theories,proposes the experimental hypothesis that double translation can help higher vocational college students improve their achievement of English study,when the significant level ?= 0.05,there will be significant differences in academic achievement of English study between the experimental class and the control class and it can also help them improve their understanding of language differences between English and Chinese.In order to verify this hypothesis,this study chose 75 electronic commerce majors in two classes of a vocational college as research subjects,and the author conducted teaching experiment research in the two classes for one term.Before the experiment,pretest paper was used to test English proficiency of these students.After the experiment,post-test was used to examine the differences of English scores between the experimental class students and the control class students.After that,SPSS(Version 21.0)was used to tally and analyze the data.Before the experiment,the researcher interviewed eight students randomly selected from each class to know their understanding of language differences between English and Chinese.He did it again after the experiment.The results show that:(1)After the experiment,means difference between the two classes was 2.8186,which was a big gap.The Sig.(bilateral)value obtained by T-test is 0.044,which was smaller than 0.05,indicating that there was a significant difference of English scores between the experimental class and the control class.The scores of the experimental class were better than those of the control class.The scores of each item in the post-test paper were analyzed and it was found that double translation could help students improve the scores in translation,writing,vocabulary and structure.By contrast,the effect of double translation in improving the scores in listening and reading was not so obvious;(2)According to the results of the interviews before and after the experiment,double translation can improve higher vocational college students' understanding of language differences between English and Chinese to a certain extent.Double translation can help higher vocational college students improve their academic achievement of English study and help them improve their understanding of language differences between English and Chinese.It can be applied within a certain range.
