The report is about the translation practice of Annual Review of Applied Linguistics in 2015.The annual review is a remarkable journal of applied linguistics in the United States. Two chapters from this annual review are translated by the author, including chapter six,Heritage Language Education and Identity in the United States and chapter nine,Analyzing Language Policy and Social Identification Across Heterogeneous Scales. The translation practice aims at helping domestic readers understand the researches on the relationship between identity and language in the field of applied linguistics in the United States and the western world.Chapter six focuses on researches on identity in the field of heritage language education.Chapter nine is an introduction to the relationship among social identity, language policy, heterogeneous resources and their influence on language change and language pedagogy. The source texts are two academic papers, mainly describing research and knowledge in applied linguistics.According to Newmark’s text typology, the source texts are classified as informative type and communicative translation should be used in its translation. However,Newmark also points out that the translator commonly uses the semantic translation and the communicative translation interchangeably in all three types of text but the emphasis should be different.Given the two points mentioned above, the author takes communicative translation as the major method, alternating use of informative and semantic translation according to the content and feature of source texts.Besides,on the guidance of these methods, the author applies certain skills to translation including literal translation, faithful translation, amplification and diversion in order to faithfully show the meaning of source texts and respect the target readers’ acceptability. The report on translation is composed of five parts. In introduction, the author mainly describes the background and significance of the report on translation. In the task description, features of source texts and requirements from the adviser are the major content. In the translation process, preparations before translation and some details in while and after translation are introduced. In the case analysis, the author analyzes and explains the cases combined with the methods and skills as specifically as possible.Lastly,in the conclusion, the author concludes knowledge and experience gained in translation process and the author hopes that would be a guidance for the future translation of the same type.
