The Skopos Theory emphasizes that translation methods should be adopted according to the purpose of the translation, which is determined by different cultural backgrounds and specific communicative expectations and needs of the target readers or audiences. At present, scholars in English-speaking countries seldom study the translation methods of academic discourse.Instead, they pay more attention to discourse analysis and academic teaching.Domestic researches mainly focus on the translation of the title or the abstract of academic texts. The problems encountered in the English to Chinese translation of academic discourse and their solutions can be further explored.Under the guidance of Skopos Theory and its three rules, this paper chooses "Why Translation is Difficult for Computers",Chapter Eight of the book Computer and Translation:A Translator's Guide,as the translation material, aiming to explore the translation strategies of English academic discourse.Computer Assisted Translation(CAT)is developed on the basis of Machine Translation, which can improve the efficiency of translators and ensure the consistency of translation. However, domestic research on this field is still limited. The translation material explains why translation is hard for a computer from two aspects, the difficulties of language understanding itself and the limitations of the computer. The translation material reflects the characteristics of English academic discourse, such as the frequent usage of technical terms and pronouns, the adoption of long sentences and passive sentences, clear logic and neat format. The purpose of this translation is to accurately convey the information in the source text, preserve its academic value, and make the target text idiomatic so that it can be accepted by the targeted readers.Under the guidance of Skopos Theory, the author analyzed the difficulties encountered in the translation process and their corresponding translation strategies respectively from the lexical level, syntactic level and textual level, such as changing the subjects, adding the logic relations, transferring cohesive ties and so on.After the practice, the author has improved the ability of translation, expecting to provide some useful suggestions for the translation of academic discourse.
